A Bit of Theory

It is not absolutely necessary to understand the theoretical material in these pages to perform the modifications -- but I urge you to read them anyway. It is so much more fun to know why your guitar sounds better. These pages won't make you an electronics expert, but there is enough information here that many people can devise their own modifications. It is also important to understand some of this information if you want to adapt these modifications to a guitar other than a Stratocaster.

RIP - laying to rest a few myths

If I had a nickle for every UseNet post I've seen where one of these myths was perpetuated I'd be sittin' on a beach in the Bahamas...

How to read simple electrical schematics.

For some modifications I've had the time to produce 3D rendered pictures. For others, you really need to be able to decipher simple schematics

How magnetic pickups work.

And how different components affect tone.

Understanding volume and tone controls.

Why the Stratocaster tone control works when it shouldn't and more...

Rockin' and Slidin'.

Selecting switches that suit you.

Identifying pickup switch terminals (interactive).

An illustrated guide to the standard Stratocaster pickup-select switch including how to identify the terminals of "non-standard" switches.

Series vs. parallel pickup wiring.

What does it mean? Why does it matter?

The complete instrument.

One must consider the interactions between every component in the signal chain. Tone starts in your fingertips and is affected by every component that the signal travels through.

To phase or not to phase.

It's difficult to provide both pickup phasing and series/parallel selection with commonly available components -- this section will help you decide which is probably most useful for you.
